International Conference InfraBIM 2018

BIM in Transport Infrastructure

V4 Visegrad Group

On November 15-16th 2018, the International InfraBIM Conference, BIM in Transport Infrastructure, was held in Krakow. It was organized by the European Center for Digital BIM Foundation (EccBIM) with the support of the infraTEAM. The honorary patrons of the conference were: Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Education and Higher Education, Minister of Infrastructure, Minister of Investment and Development, General Director of National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA), President of the Board of PKP Polish Railway Lines, President of the Management Board of Polish National Railways. In addition, patronage was provided by scientific units such as AGH University, Cracow and Silesian University of Technology, the Polish Academy of Sciences and numerous engineering organizations and associations, such as the Polish Chamber of Civil Engineers, Association of Polish Technicians in Great Britain, Association of Polish Bridge Engineers, Polish Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The Conference was attended by nearly 220 people representing the administration of road and rail, academics, designers, surveyors, contractors and suppliers of IT solutions. The most participants were from Poland, but among them were also representatives of Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Great Britain, and Russia. There were also student science clubs from Gdansk, Krakow, Rzeszow, Silesia, Warsaw and Wroclaw Universities of Technology. The content of the conference was supervised by the Program Committee, which included representatives of the Visegrad Group countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary) and other countries such as Great Britain and Syria (BIMarabia). The Committee qualified to present 15 papers on BIM technology and its use for planning, designing, construction and managing transportation infrastructure facilities. In addition, on the second day, practical workshops were held, in which six additional topics were implemented with a much more detailed approach.

The conference was opened by the President of the EccBIM Foundation Dariusz Kasznia – Chairman of the Organizing Committee and prof. Marek Salamak – Chairman of the Program Committee. In the welcome speech, the following spoke: Szymon Piechowiak from the Ministry of Investment and Development, Tomasz Stańczak from the Headquarters of GDDKiA, prof. Jaroslav Navratil from the Technical University of Ostrava and prof. Koris Kalman from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The lectures were delivered on four thematic sessions, named in sequence: Keynote Lectures, BIM for Owners, BIM in Designing and BIM in Construction. The turnout among the authors was good, thanks to which all the papers were presented.

In the Problem Session held under the chairmanship of prof. Jaroslav Navratil, four general papers were delivered. Tomasz Stanczak presented the goals of the BIM methodology in GDDKiA, while Magdalena Karolak from GDDKiA in Krakow discussed the state of implementation of the first pilot BIM project in GDDKiA, which is the construction of the Zator bypass along national road No. 28. Dariusz Kasznia explained to the audience the objectives of the EccBIM foundation, mainly based on supporting the BIM philosophy. Finally, prof. Marek Salamak from the Silesian University of Technology discussed the possibilities of using BIM technology in the maintenance of bridge structures.

The deliberations of the second session focused on the benefits and risks that may accompany the authorities in implementing BIM methodology. Subsequently: Piotr Dudek (Association of Polish Technicians in the UK) – BIM in the railways based on examples from the UK, Rafal Domanski (Chamber Domanski & Brzozowska) – public procurement law and BIM, Agata Ciolkosz-Styk (HELLER Group) – Information Asset Management with BIM and Pawel Wierzowiecki (Graph’it) – geoscaning and BIM models.

After the lunch break, the third session was held, which was aimed at designers using BIM tools in their work. Subsequently: Waldemar Kubisz (Leica Geosystems) – 3D laser scanning solutions, Tomasz Plaszczyk (Silesian University of Technology) – discussion of the open IFC data exchange format, Jakub Stanasiuk (AEC Design) – presentation of BIM tools for infrastructure. At the end, there were three speakers from Great Britain: Maciej Kindler, Ireneusz Kisielewicz and Peter Dorrell (Skanska Costain Strabag Joint Venture), who presented the British High Speed 2 project realized comprehensively using BIM technology.

The fourth session was devoted to the use of BIM methodology at the construction site. Sebastian Motyl from PNUiK Krakow showed the possibilities of railway infrastructure management using 3D models. Mateusz Turecki from Budimex presented a huge undertaking involving the use of BIM models and 3D scanning for the expansion of the waste disposal facility in copper smelter. The last paper concerned the Arkance Kontinuum tool, a common software platform for running BIM projects. The speakers were Lukasz Tonecki and Arkadiusz Lesko from Arkance System Poland.

The general discussion and the entire conference was summed up by Dariusz Kasznia and Marek Salamak. The importance of the subject of the meeting and its many innovative aspects were emphasized. Attention was drawn to the great interest in new tools not only among representatives of the construction industry, but also government administration, as evidenced by honorary patrons, interesting discussions and the presence of representatives of the most important institutions and owners of infrastructure.

The organizers would like to thank all those involved in the organization of conferences and companies that have decided to participate, in particular, PORR, Leica Geosystems, Arkance System Poland, IMB Podbeskidzie, Geotronics, HELLER Grup, PERI, CADsoft, AEC Design, Autostrada II.
